The Catania Astrophysical Observatory Laboratory for
Detectors (COLD) has been active in the development of astronomical technology
since the end of the 80s. Since last 10 years particular attention has been
addressed to new imaging devices that we called "innovative detectors ''
developed by various manufacturer and by University labs for scientific
applications. The aim is to find-out the appropriate detector in terms of
sensitivity, spectral range and operating mode for the particular astronomical

The exploitation of this expertise has brought the group to be heavily involved in several projects and activities on the characterization and development of detectors for UV and optical astronomy, and in the development and realization of astronomical cameras and instruments. During the last two years the group has participated to a scientific program financed by MIUR devoted to develop a new system based on new detectors useful for "Adaptive Optics'' and "Fast Transient Phenomena''. Educational activities through high school and university courses, student and PhD training and technological transfer to industry are fundamental activities of the group. Last but not least the group gives technological support to astronomical observations both at the Catania Astrophysical Observatory and at the Italian National Telescope Galileo.
